When I decided to learn to quilt, I spent a month watching quilting tutorials before touching fabric. I watched Donna Jordan most—her relaxed, clear teaching made quilting look like something I could handle, and have fun with. She recently passed, but her videos remain and her husband Matt is making new ones.

When I first watched The Last Homely House, it was quite a bit different than it is now. There was just this lady in out in her yard with a spinning wheel and her smartphone, looking a bit nervous and tentative. Several years later, and The Last Homely House is a whole operation. Kate is a bit like a crafty Mr. Rogers, inviting us into the world of her Northeastern England cottage, her calm voice explaining all her various projects. She’s got a video, or several, for just about anything because she’s an infinitely curious lady, and will try just about any craft. “How hard can it be?” she asks and dives in.

“Hello, lovely people…” begins each video by Kathryn Chambers, aka “k3n.” And with numerical name abbreviation begins my love for this channel. Kathryn has a lovely relaxed way about her, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s an experienced art teacher as well. Her main focus is Slow Stitch and the ethos surrounding it, but you can learn all sorts of things from her. Often, I don’t even do the projects she’s teaching, instead just running the video, letting her comforting voice fill the room as I work on my own things. She always has a couple of group projects going, joined by a bunch of followers on Facebook. And when we’re lucky, we get a sighting of her adorable dog Stella and her cat Fred Fred.
